Revelation 2:12-17

INTRODUCTION: We are in a study of the final book of the OT the book of the ‘‘Revelation’’. After some initial introduction, the book began it’s first major section with 7 letters addressed to the 7 primary church in Asia Minor, modern day Turkey.
You see the church on this map of modern day Turkey and you can see that the postal route of John’s day began in Ephesus and would follow the same order as given in the book of Revelation.
Two weeks ago we studied the letter to the Church at Ephesus Timothy, Paul’s protege was the Pastor of the Church at Ephesus. Last week we were in the letter to the church at Smyrna and we were introduced to their Pastor Polycarp. Today we travel on to Pergamum the capital of Asia Minor and they were led by a man named Antipas.

Pergamum’s library boasted 200,000 handwritten volumes and was second only to that of Alexandria. According to legend, parchment was invented by the Pergamenes to provide writing material for their library
Pergamum was an important center of worship for four of the main deities of the Greco-Roman world, and temples dedicated to Athena, Asklepios, Dionysos, and Zeus were located there.
The KEY FEATURE of the city was a giant alter to Zeus called the PERGAMON. It looked like a giant THRONE. You can see the rebuilt Pergamon today in the city of Berlin. Why Berlin? Well it was excavated by German Archeologists and was used as the model for the chief architect of Nazi Germany when we was building the podium from which Adolf Hitler would speak in Nuremberg.
It’s not surprising that Jesus described Pergemum as the city where Satan dwelt.
So the city was a center of GOVERNMENT and a center of WORSHIP.
