A Chip Off The Old Block

Exodus 34: 5-8

INTRODUCTION: Folk songs became a most popular language in the 50's, 60's and 70's -- the message of the youth to the adults, the young to the older.

For several generations a lack of openness between parents and children, much confusion, parental failure.

Jerry Leber/Mike Staler wrote a youth song:

''Yak Ti Yak, Don't Talk Back''

''Take out the papers and the trash Or you don't get no spending cash. If you don't scrub the kitchen floor You ain't going to rock and roll no more Yak ti yak, don't talk back. Just finish cleaning up your room Let's see that dust fly with that broom. Get all the garbage out of sight Or you don't go out Friday night. Yak ah yak, don't talk back. You don't give me no dirty looks, Your father's hip, he knows what cooks. Just tell your hoodlum friends outside You ain't got time to take a ride. Yak ti yak, don't talk back, yak ti yak.

(They wrote great lyrics back in the fifties!)

They were telling us things whether we wanted to Hear them or not! (You just can't win.)

Sometimes that old Bent,(that Yak ti yak,) comes out o me and flows into them -- I just can't seem to get a handle on it.

We have carbon paper between us and our children -- parent/child. We press ourselves into them even when we don't want to.

One thing you can't escape, is that your children will be pretty much just like you! Yak ti yak and all.

Children avoid actions and words but end up with the same attitudes and style.

We want to erase the bad but Exodus 34 says that there it is, etched in their lifestyle.
