Jeremiah 31:17-20
One day Charles Spurgeon was walking through the English countryside with a friend. As they walked, he saw a barn with a weather vane on the roof. On top of the vane were these words:
GOD IS LOVE. Spurgeon said to his friend that he thought this was rather an inappropriate place for such a message because he said, ‘‘Weather vanes are changeable, but God’s love is constant.’’
I John 4:8 God is love. A.W. Pink - ‘‘It is not simply that God ‘loves,’ but that He is Love itself. Love is not merely one of his attributes, but His very nature.’’
The first 39 chapters of Jeremiah God condemns his people for worshiping idols, believing lying prophets and rejecting his threats of punishment for their sins. He says that they will go into captivity for 70 years. But beginning in chapter 30 he promises that he will restore them.
Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. God loves his people because his is faithful to his covenant.
KJB Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. Because God loves us, he continues to show us mercy.
God’s love is demonstrated to his people in verses 17-20.
GOD’S PROMISE :17 Hope for your future - is that God would bring them back to the Promised land (:16b) after the 70 years of captivity for their sins.
Your children - the people who heard this promise would not return, but their children would certainly return.
Fulfilment More than 42,000 people did return in 538 BC led by Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:64) followed by other groups led by Ezra and Nehemiah. Application 1. God always promises keeps his promises. That is why we have learned to trust him. We trust him for his promises in our lives now: To be near us in times of trouble. To encourage us when we are down. To forgive our sins when we repent. To take us to be with him when we die.
