Diligent Disciples

2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)
In this verse, the Apostle Paul wants Timothy to know, and the Spirit of God wants us to know, how to become mature students of the Bible. That we grow to the point that we can feed ourselves the meat of the Word of God.
An old adage says, ‘‘Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for life.’’
Two men were out fishing one day when the game warden came out to see them. One man dropped his pole and immediately started running. When the game warden caught him, the man produced his fishing license. ‘‘If you have a license, why did you run?’’ The man said, ‘‘Because my friend who ran the other way didn’t have one.’’
Well, as a soul-winner, Paul knew a lot about fishing for men. But here he teaches Timothy how to fish for Bible truth and how to be a diligent disciple. Listen to the admonition again.
‘‘Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’’ (2 Timothy 2:15) I want to ‘‘rightly divide’’ this verse and literally take it apart word-by-word and see what we can learn about being diligent disciples.
An instruction to follow (Be diligent)

The KJV renders it as one word, ‘‘study.’’ The ESV translates it as 3 words, ‘‘Do your best.’’ But even though it is a short phrase, this word of instruction tells us some important things about being diligent disciples of Christ.
A pending death
Paul knows his life is about to end. So, he dips his pen in ink and sends the young preacher a letter. Some parts of the letter are better known. But the whole thing was written befo ...
