"PRAISING AND PRAYING/CONFESSION-CLEANSING!
In Physical Affliction
James 5:13-16
INTRO: The general theme of James is "Patient endurance of
affliction."
Each of us responds to good and bad in certain ways.
ILL. TCU "Leap into the air, " in Joy
Cast into despair when hardship comes!
Usually verbal.
Verse 12 is dealing with the outlet of our emotions when we are
in great trouble or great joy!
In great trouble, don't swear!
In great joy, don't curse!
Don't let swearing be the outlet!
1. PRAISING - cheerful/ in good spirits/ in a happy mood/
in good heart. "Let him play upon the harp"
Three kinds of songs:
Read Col. 3:16.
Psalm - Required an instrument.
Hymn - A song of praise.
Spiritual song - Music expression of Christian experience.
A Service in Second Century Rome:
At the end of the prayers, we greet one another with a kiss. Then the
president of the brethren is brought bread and a cup of wine mixed
with water; and he takes them, and offers up praise and glory to
the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the
Holy Ghost, and gives thanks at considerable length for our being
counted worthy to receive these things at His hands. When he
has included the prayers and thanksgivings, all the people present
express their joyful assent by saying Amen. (Amen means, "so be it"
in Hebrew)... then those whom we call deacons give to each of
those present the bread and wine mixed with water over which
the thanksgiving was pronounced, and carry away a portion to those
who are absent.
We call this food "Eucharist" which no one is allowed to share
unless he or she believes that the things which we teach are
true, and has been washed with the washing that is for remission
of sins and unto a second birth, and is living as Christ has commanded
“For we do not...”
Phil 2:6-11
Col. 1:15
1 Tim. 3:16 Battle Song
Eph. 5:14 Paul's best hymn
