WHAT BAPTISTS BELIEVE ABOUT BAPTISM AND THE LORD'S
SUPPER

INTRO. We have made light of the ordinances far too
long - Jokes - Stories - but when we consider the
death, burial and resurrection of our Lord, this is
serious business!

Christ is our foundation for the ordinances. Towers
of the Golden Gate Bridge 746 high, 4,200 apart.
Builders went down to bedrock. Bridge is built upon
the same rock. So two ordinances separated by span of
our Lord's earthly ministry were both built on the
same rock - Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:4 "And did all drink the same
spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual
Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."

The difference of understanding on the meaning and
purpose of baptism and the Lord's Supper have lead to
the various denominations.

I. CHRIST THE FOUNDATION OF THE PLAN - Matthew 3:6-
78:19

1. How shall we baptize?

ILL. Christ's example. Walked 25 miles to
much water. Jesus was immersed. He used
the same word "immerse" in the Great
Commission to the disciples. Baptize -
Greek word. To dip, plunge or immerse in
water. Funk and Wagnalls - to dip.
Webster - to submerge. Encyl. Americana -
From Greek baptize - to immerse or dip in
primitive church. The persons baptized
were immersed in a vessel or river. Encyl.
Britannica - When in the ceremony the
candidate for baptism is submerged under
the water, he is therefore buried with
Christ and dies with Him.

2. Great Roman arch. Has baptistery, Florence -
leaning Tower of Pisa - a place to immerse.
Jesus said, "This do till he comes - all need to
tell - This do! A command, we need to tell it.

II. CHRIST FOUNDATION OF PURPOSE - John 3:16

1) To commit ourselves in obedience to
