Introduction

After having a number of strokes four and half years ago, I’ve never fully regained my balance. And I notice this nowhere more than when on a ladder, which is bad news for me because if you know the Edwards family then you know that my wife is going to have me decorating the house for Christmas in about two weeks. So keep me in your prayers if you would! But before the strokes I used to love heights, whether it be tree climbing, rock climbing, bungee jumping, roller coasters, loved it all! I can remember around the age of ten the first time I went rappelling. I was in the Appalachian Mountains at a ropes course, if you will, where you could go rappelling, not just down a wall, but down some pretty massive cliffs. Always up for an adventure, and frankly being too young and stupid to know better, I was the first to sign up. Of course, my courage and excitement soon left me as soon as I got that harness on and locked into to the line. Wow, my heart was racing peaking over the edge of that cliff and then the instructor said the stupidest thing to me. He said, ‘Here, turn backward, plant your feet against the edge, and lean out backwards.’ Um, what? He said it would help if I even jumped a little. Excuse me? I’m mean I may have been young, but I was no idiot; I was not about to lean backward and jump. No, I didn’t what any reasonable person would do. I climbed on my belly, slowly backed over the edge and proceeded to try and climb down the rock face. You see, I didn’t trust the rope to do its job, or the harness, or the person belaying me. I was resting in my own strength, literally, as I was trying to climb down. We all do this in many different facets of life when it comes to our relationship with God. Out of fear, or fleshly desires, or just general negligence, we seek security and prosperity in all sorts of things rather than in our Lor ...
