Introduction

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is easily one of the most well-known and beloved fantasy series in literature and cinema. The books translated into 38 languages, the movies grossing $2.9 billion, you’d be hard pressed to find many people who have not had some exposure to Tolkien’s story. If I were to ask you what comes to mind, though, when you think of The Lord of the Rings, I imagine you’d talk about the ring of power, the elves and the dwarfs, Sauron the dark lord, wizards, battles, etc. But for Tolkien in his prologue to the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring, he describes the story as being about hobbits. He writes, This book is largely concerned with Hobbits, and from its pages a reader may discover much of their character and a little of their history.... Hobbits are an unobtrusive but very ancient people, more numerous formerly than they are today; for they love peace and quiet and good tilled earth: a well-ordered and wellfarmed countryside was their favourite haunt.... And the world being after all full of strange creatures beyond count, these little people seemed of very little importance. But in the days of Bilbo, and of Frodo his heir, they suddenly became, by no wish of their own, both important and renowned, and troubled the counsels of the Wise and the Great.

And Tolkien sticks to his purpose throughout the trilogy wherein we see that it is through the most unlikely of heroes that Middle Earth is saved. Of course, this notion of unlikely characters is not unique to Tolkien but rather a theme he took from Scripture. Paul speaks of God using the foolish to shame the wise, the weak to demonstrate the strength of God.
