My Will or Thy Will? (9)
Series: In Search of a King: The Book of Samuel
Patrick Edwards
1 Samuel 18:1, 1 Samuel 20:42
Introduction
As we’re settling back into our routines post-Christmas, taking down all our colorful décor, it’s a time of the year when things can feel rather bleak, aye? It’s cold, it’s dark; this is really when the seasonal depression starts ramping up for many of us. It’s when I really start dreaming of the beach. Well, let’s be frank, the Edwards household is always dreaming of the beach year-round. My wife grew up at the beach in Virginia; I only an hour and a half away. We raised our kids to love the water, and though 18-hours away from the ocean, we still take every opportunity we can to get back. You see, we’re the kind of people that will get out on the beach at the break of dawn, pack massive coolers to bring a whole day of supplies with us, and just stay by the water until dinner. It’s glorious! And I said the kids love it too, playing in the sand but more so playing in the water, swimming, boogie-boarding, skim-boarding, they have a blast. It’s funny, though, because I notice them creating and playing similar games to the ones I played when I was a kid. There’s just something instinctual about how to play in the ocean. One being standing facing the waves with your feet firmly planted and trying to not let the water move you or knock you over. I can be a lot of fun challenging yourself; you can even have some moments where you think you’re winning. But, of course, not even a grown man is a match for the power of the ocean. Inevitably a wave will come and crash right on you, knocking you silly off your feet, flipping you over and over until finally you wash up on the shore. You can’t stop the water, and, frankly, it’s foolishness to try. How much more foolish, then, to think we can resist God, that we can stop His plans from coming about? And yet, how often that’s exactly what we do! Sometimes we do it in the extreme form of Jonah ...
