Jonah 2
Introduction:
The Ham Sandwich
A Jewish rabbi and a Catholic priest were good friends. At a picnic one day, the priest was eating a ham sandwich. ‘‘You know,’’ he said to his friend, ‘‘this ham sandwich is delicious. I know you’re not supposed to eat ham, but I don’t understand why such a good thing would be forbidden. When will you break down and try it?’’ To which the rabbi replied, ‘‘At your wedding.’’ We are looking at the Will of God for the year of 2022 from the Book of Jonah. God told Jonah to go to the Ninevites and preach repentance, and Jonah was determined to go several thousand miles in the opposite direction from Nineveh! God is a second chance God, and wanted the Ninevites to turn from their cruelty and sin, and come to faith in God. Jonah knew they were on the warpath, and sooner or later they would come marching into the Nation of Israel to overthrow the country and kill the men, and enslave the women and children. Many feel that Jonah did not want to preach because he was scared, they would kill him.
As we studied last week, Jonah told the sailors to throw him overboard so we could say he must have thought he would drown. I do not believe he was scared to die, but he was scared that the Ninevites would destroy His beloved Israel, and they did! In 721 B.C. Sennacherib came arching into the Nation of Israel and carried the Ten Northern tribes into captivity. So, The Ninevites did repent at the preaching of Jonah, but less than a hundred years later, they were at it again! We will see today that Jonah has one of the strangest prayer meetings ever recorded in history! He turned the belly of a whale into a prayer altar and prayed to God for deliverance which was granted by God! This is a great chapter in so many ways, so with ...
