Introduction



1. There is something that is true about of all of us. It is true of every person you will ever meet. It is true of every person who ever has lived or ever will live and that is we all have parents. Though we did not realize it at the time growing up, our parents had certain dreams for us. When children become parents, they have dreams for their children. I knew early on that my parents had dreams for me to graduate from college. My dad had a dream that I might be a doctor, because that is what he wanted to be but he never got the chance to go to school. Some parents make it obvious what their dreams are for their children.



2. Some spend thousands of dollars sending their children to tennis camps, giving them golf lessons, the best coaches in football, baseball and basketball, because they want their child to excel and get a scholarship and perhaps become a professional athlete. Other parents want their children to take over the family business. Parents gently nudge their children toward a particular school or discipline because they want them to either become a lawyer, CEO, politician, or perhaps even a minister that they were or wanted to be.



3. I am not saying these dreams are wrong. I am just saying they are there - dreams for our children. Our heavenly father is no different. He has a dream for all of his children. It is the same for all of his children. It is found in this word - disciple. God gave one job to the church - to make disciples. The first thing Jesus did in his ministry was to call twelve disciples. He spent the vast majority of his three-year ministry touring and modeling for these men what it means to be a disciple.



4. Perhaps the most common term used by believers in our day is the word ‘‘Christian,’’ but frankly that is odd, because the word ‘‘Christian’’ only occurs three times in the Bible. Thr ...
