Philippians 2:8
We’re in a new series called ‘‘Borrowed Time.’’ It’s based on a Psalms 31:14, ‘‘I trust in you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my God,’ and my time is in your hands.’’
I used an analogy last week from King’s Island: Love is like a Rollercoaster. When you ride the Racer at King’s Island you go up a mountain, through a tunnel and end up in a valley. In life we endure mountains of misunderstandings, tunnels of Selfishness, and valleys of Mistakes.
This morning I want to begin with embellish that analogy because I know you didn’t get enough! Let’s suppose you’re a rollercoaster connoisseur and you’ve designed the world’s greatest ride. It’s the fastest, steepest, loopiest, and jaw-droppingest rollercoaster that’s ever been built. But - when you get strapped into that front car - there’s a steering wheel!
Then you hear the ride operator say: ‘‘Welcome to King’s Island and welcome to the original rollercoaster, Racer. We’ve kind of changed things up today and I think it’s only fair for you to know that today the rollercoaster isn’t attached to a track.’’
Right about now you aren’t sure what’s happening, but the announcer continues. ‘‘To return safely, you have to steer it perfectly. If you don’t, it’ll come off the track. But, you’ll be glad to know, we do have an ambulance standing by.’’
How many of you are still riding? If you’re smart, you’d get off! But that’s exactly what we do in the Christian life. Life is fast, steep, and loopy, and yet we insist on taking the wheel from God!
In our arrogance, we try to steer our own lives! We want to have control! In fact, we want to control everybody else, too. So we shouldn’t be surprised when the wheels come off the tracks and we crash and burn.
We’re trying to understand that we’re living on ‘‘Borrowed Time.’’ Why? Because we don’t want any regrets. If you live as if you’re dyin’ you will have learned how to live.
