Last year in preparing to preach a parallel passage in Ezra, I came across a list of lists. It described the importance of ''lists'' in history and in culture. At the top of the list of lists was:

Santa's list...the record of those who've been naughty or nice

Schindler's list...Mr. Schindler spared WW2 Jews from a Nazi death camp

The FBI's 10 Most Wanted List...list of fugitives sought by feds

The Ten Commandments...a list of God's moral laws

Bucket List...things you'd like to do before you ''kick the bucket''

Craigslist...where you buy things online you used to get at yard sale

But in Nehemiah 7, we find one of the most important lists in the Bible. As we'll see, this is actually the 2nd time that THIS list has been included in the Scripture. It's a genealogical list, also found in Ezra 2, of those qualified to serve as priests in the rebuilt temple of Jerusalem.

More importantly, this list represents those who have dedicated their life to serve Jesus and are leading their children and grandchildren to do the same.

I ask, ''Are you sure whether your name is on that list?''

The purpose of Godly labor (1, 3)

One of the most frequent questions that parents get is, ''Why?'' When it comes to the things of God, that's not a bad question. And it's a question we had better be able and ready to answer for our descendants.

Why do we do the things we do for the Lord Jesus?

An emphasis on protection (1a, 3)

The wall was built but the work wasn't done when the wall went up because the work of God is never about a building a building. It is always about building a people for His glory.

The wall was important because of WHO lived in that city and WHAT happened in that city. God's people lived there and God's worship happened there.

These were watchmen who stood on the wall and stood by the doors and gates ...
