Nehemiah 8:7-18
Psalm 28:7 says, ''The Lord is my strength and my shield.''
Exodus 15:2 - The Lord is my strength and my defense
Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
Here in Nehemiah 8, we read about one of the greatest secrets to walking in the strength of the Lord.
Many things are measured by their strength. From fish line to garbage bags to steel beams, we are interested in how much a particular product can withstand.
Football programs will often have a coach whose only job is ''strength and conditioning.''
In Joshua 1:8, the man of God is told to be strong and of good courage. But how do you do that? And how will you know if you are, in fact, strong in the Lord? I think the balance of chapter 8 gives us 3 signs of a strong and steady walk with God.
A great burden (7-9)
There's an old expression in athletics that says, ''No pain, no gain.'' That is certainly true in spiritual matters. And it's a major reason many believers never grow in their strength.
As a weight lifter, if you are never willing to be sore, you will never be a champion. As a salesman, if you are scared to be told ''no'' then you'll never be told ''yes.'' In every area of life, including childbirth itself, LIFE and GROWTH involve PAIN.
Before God could grow and strengthen this crowd, He had to break them and crush them with a great burden. The way He did it then is the way He does it today.
Notice 2 things about this burden.
The words of the Scripture (7-8)
These could really be compared to church elders, teaching elders, or even Sunday School teachers. They break down the words and give them meaning.
