Nehemiah 9:1-3
In the city of Cartersville, GA, right around the corner from the courthouse is the Sam Jones Memorial Methodist Church. The church is named in memory of a fiery Methodist evangelist from the 1800's, known for his ''quittin' meetin'.''
You may ask what a church service would be called a ''quittin' meetin'.''
Brother Jones would preach such a strong view of holiness that his revivals became famous for what he called, ''quittin' testimonies.'' People would parade forward and confess they were quitting smoking, drinking, cursing, gambling, womanizing, etc.
In one meeting after a series of dramatic testimonies Jones asked a woman in the church, ''Madam, what are you quittin'?'' She said, ''I haven't been doing anything.'' He replied, ''Well you ought to quit that too!''
Nehemiah 9 could be described as an old-fashioned ''quittin' meeting.'' The powerful revival that concluded in chapter 8 is still having a practical manifestation on the people of God. In chapter 8, there was a revival. It was an authentic move of God with Bible preaching, heartfelt praise, and genuine repentance.
We tend to hold 4-5 day services and call them ''revivals.'' However, when the last service is over, things are still the same way they were before the first service started. Thus, while we may have had a meeting, we did not have revival.
Not so in Nehemiah's day. Weeks after the revival of Nehemiah 8 ended, you can still see the effects in the lives of God's people.
In Ch. 8 there was feasting. In Ch. 9 there is fasting.
In Ch. 8 there was celebration. In Ch. 9 there is confession.
In Ch. 8 we heard worshipping. In Ch. 9 we see walking.
The Bible says that Enoch walked with God.
The Bible also says that Noah walked with God.
I believe these Jews WALKED with GOD.
And in these 3 verses we see 3 traits of their walk with God.
