Telling the Truth in Love

Proverbs 19:1-10
Introduction:
We are returning to the Book of Proverbs tonight and we will examine the first ten verses. Solomon is warning his readers, as well as his son Rehoboam that one needs to be very careful with the words that are utilized. Wicked language produces a wicked life! Some of the most wicked people that I have ever met used profanity without embarrassment. And yet, some of the most upright people that I have met seem to use their words as a method to encourage and build up others. The choice is ours to make, and these first few verses of this chapter warn us that we must surrender ourselves to the Lord, and say only what He would want us to say, or we will entrap ourselves into destruction without even knowing what has happened.
9:1ff Wisdom and Folly (foolishness) are portrayed in this chapter as rival young women, each preparing a feast and inviting people to it. But Wisdom is a responsible woman of character, while Folly is a prostitute serving stolen food. Wisdom appeals first to the mind; Folly to the senses. It is easier to excite the senses, but the pleasures of Folly are temporary. By contrast, the satisfaction that wisdom brings lasts forever.-Life Application Bible Notes

9:1-5 The banquet described in this chapter has some interesting parallels to the banquet Jesus described in one of his parables (Luke 14:15-24). Many may intend to go, but they never make it because they get sidetracked by other activities that seem more important at the time. Don't let anything become more ...
