Central Idea of the series: The Christian home is defined by principles modelled in the Christmas story.
Central idea of this sermon: The Magi model the characteristic of ‘‘worship’’ that defines the Christian home. We worship through veneration, treasure and variety.
INTRODUCTION: Someone has said: ‘‘You know what would have happened if there had been three wise WOMEN instead of three wise MEN, don’t you? The three wise WOMEN would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and given practical gifts! We’re in a sermon series entitled HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. In this series we’re letting the various characters of the Christmas narrative illustrate some facet of a Christian home. Last week Mary and Joseph modelled OBEDIENCE for us. Today I want to take a look at the Magi and see what they can teach us about WORSHIP in the Christian home. Mt.2:2 ‘‘We have come to worship him.’’
IN A CHRISTIAN FAMILY WE WORSHIP THROUGH VENERATION Matthew 2:11 ‘‘On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.’’
The gifts of the Magi were given in an attitude of veneration. We see this in their posture as they bow down before the child Jesus to worship him. Veneration means honor, adoration, appreciation, thanksgiving, respect, reverence, and awe. The attitude of the giver in worship is every bit as important as the gift itself to God. The veneration that we have in our hearts for God sanctifies our gifts to him and makes them acceptable. If that veneration for God is missing, the gifts are not acceptable. In Acts chapter 5 we read of a married couple in the church named Ananias and Sapphira. They sold some property and contributed some of the money from the sale to the church. However, they claimed to contribute ALL of the money to the church. See th ...
