Mark 1:15-20: (15) And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. (16) Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. (17) And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. (18) And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him. (19) And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. (20) And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

What is the primary purpose of the church?

To win men, women, teenagers, boys and girls to the the Lord Jesus. To teach them to follow the Lord in Scriptural baptism, and then to disciple them, to grow them in Christ, and teach them to win others to Jesus.

The question becomes -- Why did Jesus choose fishermen to spread the message of salvation? We know that eight out of the 12 disciples were fishermen...so what did Jesus see in these men when asking them to follow Him?

It is obvious that he saw they were:
Dependable -- they were Strong -- they were Enduing -- and they were Cooperative.

They had to be in order to be good fishermen.

In the days of Jesus -- fishermen weren't considered to be members of high society. The occupation of a fisherman was considered the lowest of the low in society.

I remember when I was in grade school and was not making good grades -- my dad would threaten me and say, ''If you don't study and make good grades -- you will flunk out of school and wind up being nothing but a ditch digger -- because when I was young -- that was considered the low of the low for a job.
