Ezra is a book about revival, renewal, and restoration. And it all surrounds a special building project. At first, it appears to be a book about rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple. But it's more about God rebuilding a people. And we will see, even today, this book is really about the glory of Jesus.

My heart and study have turned to Ezra because of the building project we are about to undertake here at Emmanuel. As we embark on this building project, I want to use the book of Ezra to keep us focused on this truth. The work of God is never about building a building. It's about building a people for the glory of the Lord Jesus.

Today's sermons will intentionally be more ''teaching'' than ''preaching'' as you prepare you for this trip through Ezra. When you take a trip, it's good to let all the travelers know where you are going. If I had a bus out front and asked, ''Who wants to go?'' very few would enlist. You'd want to know some things like:

Where are we going?
Who else is going?
Why are we going?
How long will we be gone?
What do I need to bring?
What will we do and see on the trip?

Where are we going? We are headed from Babylon to Jerusalem. The Jews have been in Babylonian captivity for 70 years as a consequence of their sin. As a remnant of Jews goes from Babylon back to Jerusalem, we are going to go with them.

Who else is going? Zerubbabel, Ezra, and eventually Nehemiah. But sadly, not many more people are going...at least not as far as percentage.

If you've ever been surprised or disappointed in the sign-up sheet for a church event, you will relate to the general shock at the number of Israelites who do NOT want to sign up to leave Babylonian captivity and head to the freedom of Jerusalem.
