Praising the God Who Rebuilds and Restores

This lesson is part 2 of a general survey of the book of Ezra. I am using the first chapter to introduce the big and broad themes of this Old Testament history book. There are actually 10 main lessons I have already identified in my study of Ezra. Each of them is previewed in this opening chapter.

I have already mentioned 5 of them that we see in the first 3 verses. But before I give you the next 5 lessons, let me repeat something I told you in lesson 1.

Ezra is a book about revival, renewal, and restoration. And it all surrounds a special building project. At first, it appears to be a book about rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple. But it's more about God rebuilding a people for the glory of Jesus Christ.

So, again, there are 10 big messages we will see in this awesome book. Let's briefly review the first 5 and then look at the others.

1. God reveals His will in His word (1a)

The word of God is a major theme of Ezra and it must be a major theme of our lives too.

It is God's will for young people to obey their parents.
How do we know that? Ephesians 6:1

It is God's will for ALL people to honor their parents.
How do we know that? Exodus 20:12

It is God's will for believers to be baptized.
How do we know that? Matthew 28:19

It is God's will for single adults to be sexually pure.
How do we know that? 1 Cor. 6:18

It is God's will for us to tell the truth.
How do we know that? Proverbs 12:22

It is God's will for us to guard our minds.
How do we know that? Colossians 2:8

1. God reveals His will in His word (1a)
2. God is never doing nothing (1b)

As we travel through Ezra we will see the MANIFESTATIONS of things God has been working on for a long time. And in our lives, when we see God move, it's just a manifestation of something God's been planning from eternity past.
