At first, it appears to be a book about rebuilding Jerusalem and the temple. But it's more about God rebuilding a people for the ultimate glory of Jesus.
As we embark on our own building project, I want to use the book of Ezra to keep us focused on this truth. The work of God is never about building a building. It's about building a people for the glory of the Lord Jesus.
I recently came across a list of lists. It described the importance of ''lists'' in history and in culture. At the top of the list of lists was:
Santa's list...the record of those who've been naughty or nice
Schindler's list...a list of Jews spared from a Nazi death camp
The FBI's Ten Most Wanted List...a list of fugitives sought by feds
The Ten Commandments...a list of God's moral laws
Bucket List...a list of things you'd like to do before you ''kick the bucket''
Craigslist...a list of things you can buy online you used to get at a yard sale
Life is full of lists...To do list...shopping list...wish list
But near the end of Ezra 2, we find one of the most important lists in the Bible. It's a genealogical list of those qualified to serve as priests in the rebuilt temple of Jerusalem.
More importantly, this list represents those who have dedicated their life to serve Jesus and are leading their children and grandchildren to do the same.
I ask, ''Are you sure whether your name is on that list?''
1. The Identity of this List
This is obviously an important list. Not only is it in the Bible, it's in the Bible TWICE. This list is recorded a second time in Nehemiah 7. Once is sufficient. Twice is impressive.
But what exactly is this list? What was the list HISTORICALLY and what is it SYMBOLICALLY, or TYPOLOGICALLY? Some have suggested that this list is a list of God's people. Therefore, they say, it is symbolic of the Lamb's ...
