I've reminded you in each lesson that the work of God is never about building a building. It's about building a people for the glory of the Lord Jesus.
3x in this chapter and 2x in this text, the Bible says the hand of God was upon Ezra. Oh, that's what I want for my life!
I don't want to live that life of mediocrity and satisfaction.
I don't want to make it into heaven, ''Saved as by fire.''
I want to live with ''the hand of God'' on my life.
He grew up in captivity. But like Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, he rose to prominence and influence in a pagan land.
One day, some 60 years after the reconstruction of the Jerusalem temple, Ezra made a request to king Artexerxes to travel back to Jerusalem. Not only did the king grant permission but he issued a decree that everyone should give money to support his work AND that anybody that didn't do what Ezra said should be exiled, thrown in jail, or even executed.
That's quite an accomplishment for a man who was himself a slave in a foreign land. Why did that happen? Because as verse 6 says, ''The hand of the Lord his God was upon him.''
When Ezra got permission to go home to Jerusalem, he might have said, ''No matter what is going on IN your life, you can make it if you have God ON your life.''
Then he traveled on a difficult journey, 1,000 miles from Babylon to Jerusalem...leading a caravan of 100s of people... laden down with all of the gold and silver, making them a target for bandits. But they arrived safely in Jerusalem after 4 months.
That's quite an accomplishment for a man traveling with that much money and no military escort. Why? Because as verse 9 says, ''The hand of the Lord his God was upon him.''
