Chapters 9-10 really tell one long story. It's the story of God's people getting right with God. It's the story of people recognizing their sin, getting broken over their sin, and demonstrating that brokenness with a changed lifestyle.

Don't tell God you're sorry about your sin if you won't change. He may ask you, ''Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord' and do not do what I say to do?''

But here in chapters 9-10 we read about a preaching service in which the people fall under deep conviction, confess their sins, and ultimately change their behavior.

This is as much a part of the building program as the work of Zerubbabel and the future work of Nehemiah. Because the work of God is never about building a building. It's about building a people for the glory of the Lord Jesus.

Building a building may involve using brick and mortar. But to build a people, it takes the preaching of the word of God and our full, total, and complete compliance with it.

That's the whole reason that Ezra came to Jerusalem. And that work of revival and reformation is recorded in 3 scenes that we will observe in our final 3 lessons in this book. In the next two weeks we will see the confession of sin and the consequences of sin. But here in chapter 9, it all begins with the conviction of sin.

Just like a good recipe has ingredients, the recipe for the conviction of sin has at least 3 ingredients. Any time you have a move of God there will be conviction of sin. And any time you have conviction of sin, you will have these 3 things.
