The Confession of Sin (18 of 19)
Series: Ezra
Mike Stone
Ezra 9:5-15
Part of the series: EZRA
Praising the God Who Rebuilds and Restores
As I mentioned last time, chapters 9-10 really tell one long story. It's the story of God's people getting right with God. It's the story of people recognizing their sin, getting broken over their sin, and demonstrating that brokenness with a changed life style.
But here in chapters 9-10 we read about a preaching service in which the people see and sense a genuine move of God. There is bold preaching that leads ultimately to a transformed practice. This is as much a part of the building program as the work of Zerubbabel and the future work of Nehemiah. Because, as I have mentioned in each lesson in Ezra, the work of God is never about building a building. It's about building a people for the glory of the Lord Jesus.
There is a drama that unfolds in chapters 9 and 10 and it is presented in 3 acts. Last time, we saw the conviction of sin. Next time we will notice the consequences of sin. But in between we read the painful but beautiful story of the confession of sin.
There are many invitations to confession in the Bible.
1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins..
Psalm 32:5 - I acknowledge my sin unto You and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, ''I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.'' And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Leviticus 5:5 - When anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess in what way they have sinned.
James 5:16 - Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
While there are many invitations to confess, there are also some wonderful illustrations of confession. These are places where God not only mandates but models true, genuine confession. I would cite for your further study Psalm 51, Psalm 32, Daniel 9, Nehemiah 9, and here i ...
