I’VE COME TODAY TO BRING GREAT JOY TO YOU.
Great joy = exceeding joy = fullness of joy
This is the JOY that we sing about when we sing Joy to the World. We all know that there are joys that are IN THE WORLD, and they aren’t necessarily bad things, but they just don’t last forever. Ice skating at Rockefeller center in NY. Sipping on a hot chocolate in frigid temperatures. Toys at Christmas Getting the gift you really wanted for Christmas. Baby comes Dream comes true Got the job Got the promotion Got approved for the new house Winning the game at the buzzer.
These are all great but they are temporary like everything else in the world. There is a different kind of JOY that was brought to us 2000 years ago and that the Scriptures reveal to us.
It is called Great Joy and it was Announced first to the Shepherds.
Luke 2:8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them, ‘‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (ESV)
This is the greatest story that has ever been told. THIS GREAT JOY IS THE GIFT THAT CAME 2000 YEARS AGO AND WAS PLACED IN A MANGER - The Gift was God Himself wrapped in human flesh. The mystery of the incarnation. God became a man and dwelt among us. The Messiah is here. What was promised has been fulfilled. The Messiah has come, a Savior is born, and WE REJOICE!
