I Confess My Sin (1 of 2)

1 John 1:5-9

Before we can confess our sin, we must first acknowledge it. Here is how I see things when it comes to confessing sin.

Acknowledge ———> Confess ———> Turn ———> Grow

We cannot confess sin until we acknowledge it as sin and unless we want to keep going around the mountain and never coming into all that God has for us, we must turn or repent. We then can learn from it, overcome it, and grow in our relationship with God.

Here is our key scripture for today:

1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (ESV)

God is Light and Light exposes darkness.

What does light do? It shines bright yes, but it’s main function is that it exposes darkness. God is light and when God is present, the darkness gets exposed. That’s why people don’t want to come to the Lord, because they don’t want their sins to be exposed. They don’t want the truth to be revealed. They want to stay hidden away. Hiding in solitude. Hiding in darkness.
