Not long ago I had a conversation with a man who was struggling with an addiction. I said, ''I'm going to share something with you that I wish someone had shared with me. It's something you probably have never heard from the church. Stop trying to fix yourself. Stop trying to overcome your addiction.'' I then went on to explain the biblical principles of our promise that God will defeat our sins, and He can do so without human effort.
This truth was born out of my own testimony. I grew up in church, but before I became a believer, my flesh was already hooked on sinful addictions. Once I became a Christian, I thought it was my responsibility to defeat my addiction. When I couldn't, it created a lot of guilt and frustration. For my first twenty or more years of my Christian life, I promised God I would stop, but it was a promise I had no power to keep.
When I fell, I felt God's anger. I repented, begged for forgiveness, swore off my sins, and fell again. And again. And again. On rare occasions, I could hold out for a few months, but usually I would peak out in a day or so. Inevitably, I'd fall, then I would hide from God.
At church the preacher would proclaim, ''Look at your sin. Surely your sins will find you out. God is angry at the wicked everyday, and if your life isn't right when you walk out of here, you might have an accident and find yourself standing before an angry God.''
Let me prelude this study by saying this is not the gospel Jesus taught. Nor is it the gospel taught by the apostles. I examine this topic in detail in the study, The Revelation of Grace, so I won't go into all the details again here. But what I will say is that the Old Testament Law put man under condemnation. Those who are under that law are still under God's wrath, but in Christ we have escaped wrath.
