THE POWER OF A TOUCHED POCKETBOOK
Or SO MIGHTLY GREW THE WORD OF GOD, AND PREVAILED
Dr. Miles Seaborn
Acts 19:20-41
INTRO. Two key phrases - verses 20 & 23
Paul faced the dead intellectualism of Athens, the
pleasure-mad crowds of Cornith - but here the
material-minded throngs of Ephesus - strong opposition
in this great town - yet Paul wrote, "A great door and
effectual is open to me!"
It was pictured like this: "It lay at the meeting-
point of great roads, which led northwards to Sardis
and Toroas, southwards to Magnesia and Antioch, and
thus commanded easy access to the great rive-valleys
of the Hermus and Meander, and the whole interior
continent. Its seas and rivers were rich with fish;
its air was salubrious; its position unrivalled; its
population multifarious and immense. Its markets,
glittering with the produce of the world's art, were
the Vanity Fair of Asia. They furnished to the exile
of Patmos the local coloring of those passages of the
Apocalypse in which he speaks of the 'merchandise of
gold, and sliver, and precious stones, and of pearls,
and fine linen, and purple, and silk and scarlet, and
all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and
all manner vessels of the most precious wood, and of
brass, and iron, and marble, and cinnamon and odors,
and ointment and franincese, and wine, and oil, and
fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and
horses, and chariots, and slaves, and SOULS OF
MEN...'" Yet the Word of God says - So Mighty - (with
overpowering strength) grew this WORD. It created a
great stir - from the lips of the enemy we hear how
much!
