Jesus Our Jubilee
Mark Baker
Leviticus 25
It is the time of year that we celebrate the Christmas season, and the birth of our Savior. However, we mustn't lose sight of the reason for His coming. He came to restore mankind to the Father. He came to destroy the works of the devil. He came to give life and give it more abundantly. He came to give us eternal life. He came to forgive us our debts.
1Jn:3:8, Jn:10:10.
With this in mind let's take a look at what Jesus said about Himself, as He read from the Prophet Isaiah.
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Luke 4:16-19.
Romans:10:17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Jesus was sent to preach deliverance and recovery. We have to hear this. This is the method God uses to produce faith in the hearts of people. We also know that without faith it is impossible to please God. We have to hear the Word of God in order to believe. We also have to act on what we believe in order to receive the blessing. Blessings from God are always a result of obedience to His Word.
The acceptable year of the Lord that Jesus was talking about was called the year of Jubilee, which took place every 50 years. The Hebrews were well acquainted with Jubilee, unlike many Christians today who are unfamiliar with this. These things were types of things to come. Understanding these truths helps us to relate to not only why things happened but also how it relates to us in our ...
