Have you notice how things accumulate over the years? When Kristal and I first got married we didn't have enough furniture and stuff to fill a small apartment but over time that has drastically changed! That little bit of stuff has multiplied through the years. Now it is a battle to store and organize our stuff.

At different points in our marriage, we've had to cull our things. Unless you are a hoarder who simply cannot bear part with your treasures, you have to clean house. You simply cannot afford to keep what is broken, everything you consider to be sentimental, what is outgrown or no longer in use. There comes a time when it must go. The clutter can only be tolerated so long.

As we turn our attention to OT prophet Zephaniah, we discover it's cleaning day. God is going to clean house. His house includes His people, the Jewish nation, the nations and all of creation. God has watched as humanity's sin has multiplied and dirtied every part of God's good and beautiful creation. Man's sin had so polluted and ruined all it touched, it was time to make a clean sweep.

Zephaniah 1.2-3 - I will completely sweep away everything from the face of the earth-this is the Lord's declaration. 3 I will sweep away people and animals; I will sweep away the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, and the ruins along with the wicked. I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth. This is the Lord's declaration.

As we think about God cleaning house, we do think on several different levels. Here, at the opening of his message, Zephaniah tells us that God's cleaning session, His judgment, is universal.
In our studies of the minor prophets, we have seen God's judgment pronounced on God's people. We have seen it declared against Nineveh/Babylonians and Edom.
