Isaiah 9:1-7


Today is the first Sunday of Advent and we are kicking off our Advent/Christmas series. We are going to be studying Isaiah 9:1-7, particularly verse 6. We are going to be looking at the names of the Messiah... the character traits of the Messiah listed there. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

This Messianic prophecy was given at a time in Israel's history when they needed hope. - Hope was coming... and hope has a name.

Maybe this Advent season you can use some hope.

Did you know that for many the holiday season is a very discouraging, depressing time. If people struggle with loneliness, they may feel more lonely during this season. For many the holidays are not cheerful, for various reasons they are difficult. Hope is needed.

All over our city, state, and nation... people are in needed of hope. Marriages are struggling, parents are stressed. - Inflation is rising, gas prices are surging. Culture wars are raging. In the midst of all that people are dealing with their own personal struggles at home, at work, in their private lives. - People need hope.

Our hope is not in the economy, politicians, Western culture, or even the U.S. - Our hope is in a true and better King that will one day bring the consummation of our future hope. - Until, then He showers our lives with hope, love, peace, and joy.

In Isaiah 9 we see a Messianic prophecy given during at a time God's people needed hope...


Isaiah 9:1-7 - But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; ...
