Raised up to Stand Up (1 of 7)
Series: The Life and Ministry of Elijah
Josh Malone
1 Kings 16:29-17:1
Today we begin a new series on the life and times of Elijah. - Elijah was an OT prophet that we can read about in 1 Kings 17 through 2 Kings 2. He's a unique figure who suddenly appears on the pages of Scripture in today's text and then disappears from this earth in a unique way in 2 Kings 2 when he is taken in a chariot of fire.
His life consisted of miraculous events. He prayed and God literally sent fire from Heaven. God used him to see the dead raised. He was a unique prophet in the Bible. But he was also not perfect or w/o troubles. He fled in fear at one point and slunk into a depression, but God ministered to him and put him back into his service.
To understand Elijah and what we can learn from his life and times... we have to understand the time he was in. It was a dark, sinful time in the life of Israel. It was a time when a very wicked king ruled and Israel was continuing to slink into spiritual decline.
Yet God raised up Elijah to stand up in his day and point people back to God.
Elijah stood with boldness on the truth of God and boldly lived for the Lord.
Big Idea: God raised up Elijah to boldly stand against the spiritual decline of his day and call people to repentance. As followers of Christ we need to recognize sin in us and around us and stand against spiritual decline in our lives, and the life of the church... while calling a lost and dying world to faith in Christ.
1 Kings 16:29-17:1 - 29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab the son of Omri began to reign over Israel, and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty-two years. 30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD, more than all who were before him. 31 And as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took for his wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king ...
