ILLUS. - If I drove an SUV up to a dock on the Pacific Ocean in CA... and said... ''I'm going to take this SUV to Hawaii, I really think it can get me there.'' - You'd think I was crazy. An SUV is not built for that. It's not going to get me across the ocean.
We sometimes have a habit of trusting the wrong things for the wrong things... or trusting things other than God to provide for us... supply us with what only God can. Created things are designed be trusted in this way.
The Bible teaches God is the ultimate Provider. In fact, today's text highlights His ability to provide when others couldn't.
Idolatry many times is about PROVISION. - You look to an idol to provide you with something... it could be comfort, security, pleasure, power....or it could be you look to one of those things to grant you the since of peace you long for. - You can look to an idol to provide you a sense of identity, to help you define who you are.
Many times idolatry is about looking to something or someone other than God to provide for you what only God can truly provide.
Sometimes idolatry is looking for things to do what they aren't supposed to do. It's trusting in the wrong things.... at times even good things... for something only God can do.
Last week we were introduced to Ahab... the wicked, idolatrous King of Israel, his idolatrous wife Jezebel... and then to Elijah the prophet of God who comes on the scene to confront the idolatry of his day.
In Elijah's day Ahab and Jezebel were promoting BAAL worship. They believed Baal to be a ''storm god'' who controlled the rain. - If it rained they thought... ''that's Baal.'' - If there was a drought or a non-rainy season, they thought Baal had submitted to ''Mot, the god of death'' and they awaited another god to free him.
Elijah comes on the scene and says... It's not going to rain again until I say so. - And a ...
