1 Kings 17:17-24
ILLUS. - Life is full of ups and downs isn't it? - There is a kids roller coaster over at Hollywood Studios, that I despise. It's called Slinky Dog. It has this one portion that it just does this up and down, up and down... repetitive and fast... I hate it. - Another one I don't like... the Tower of Terror.. it brings you UP... and drops you DOWN... suddenly and fast. No thanks. - But life can be like that... you can be up...and then down. Sometimes you have a high after a low... and then... the bottom falls out when you least expect it. Ever been there?
We live in a FALLEN WORLD. - This world has hurt, pain, suffering... it also has joys, miracles. - The effects of sin are clearly marking this world... but the good news is God is at work in our broken world.
Life in one sense is a series of trials of various kinds. If you were to look at the timeline of your life it may be up and down... some folk have steeper ups, some steeper downs - nobody's life would look the same... nobody lives a straight line or incline... or decline. It rains on the just and unjust. Good and bad days come to us all.
But then there is death. - That is a trial... that we must all face. - It is no respecter of persons. - It's the most feared thing on planet earth. In Job it is referred to as the ''king of terrors.'' - We all need hope that can get us through trials and can outlast death.
In today's text the widow from Zarepath finds where that hope is found.
Context: Elijah has emerged to confront King Ahab about the sinful idolatry he and his wife Jezebel are propagating throughout Israel. Baal worship is being pushed throughout the land. Baal was believed to be a ''storm god'' that controlled the rain. - Elijah shows up and says ... there will be NO RAIN... until I say so. - God is going to send a drought to prove Baal doesn't control the rain.. ...
