Waiting for the Rain (5 of 7)
Series: The Life and Ministry of Elijah

1 Kings 18:41-46
Last week, we saw the showdown on Mount Carmel. - Elijah, God's prophet, called for all of Israel to meet him on Mt. Carmel, along with the prophets of Baal and Asherah. There he challenged them ... they'd both offer a bull on an altar... and pray for who they believed to be God... to send fire down and consume the sacrifice. - Baal's prophets begged, limped, bled... nothing. No answer. - Elijah... had the altar soaked with water... then prayed... and fire fell from Heaven. - Israel cried out that the Lord He is God... and they wiped out the prophets of Baal.
So what now? - Remember there was a drought in the land for over 3 years. The people need rain. Now that the people have responded this way and the prophets of Baal have been disposed of... they need... RAIN.
The short passage today records the time between the fire falling on the altar and the rain returning to Israel. It's time for Elijah to WAIT ... w/ expectation... upon the Lord.
ILLUS. - Sometimes we have a GAP we have to manage. - That's the Christian life... gap between being saved... and final salvation. - We don't like gaps... we like PRIME shipping. - Like I skip the stuff on Amazon that's not Prime... don't you. If it ain't primes, don't waste my time. - I don't want no 4-5 day gap. - I won't it now. - That's not the Christian life though is it. No... we wait upon the Lord, His promises... life in general is fille w/ it.
We've all been there... simply waiting. In a season waiting for what's next... or waiting upon God's promises that He is sure to fulfill. - In fact... this is the Christian life... we are WAITING... for the fulfillment of what we know to be coming.
In this waiting period... we once again see Yahweh and not Baal is God. - Remember... they believed him to be a ''storm god.'' They looked to him for the rain they needed. But it is not Baal but God who send ...
