Revelation 22:1-5
In 1864 in New York city a typhoid epidemic of contaminated food and water was raging which resulted in 1425 people dying.
One hot July day during a heatwave in the midst of the epidemic
pastor Robert Lowry thought about his many friends and loved ones who had recently died. Exhausted and sick he remembered the passage in Revelation 22:1 about the river of life in heaven.
He asked himself why do hymn writers focus so much on the mournful river of death we must cross, but so little on the delightful river of life that Christians will enjoy in heaven?
As a result, he wrote the hymn We Shall Gather at the River.
Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet had trod,
With its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God?
When we reach that shinning river, we'll lay every burden down,
Grace our spirits will deliver and will receive our robe and crown.
Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river that flows from the throne of God.
For the Christian our hope is centered in Christ who has gone to heaven to prepare a place for us to live with him for all eternity.
As we look at the inside of the New Jerusalem it seems to be like
a beautiful garden which reminds us of the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2:10-14 where everything was perfect before sin entered.
The blessings of heaven will restore what we lost because of sin.

Water of life - symbol of eternal life given to us by God.
John 4:13-14 Jesus said to the woman at the well, ''Everyone
who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever
drinks of the water that I give him will become in him
a spring of water welling up to eternal life.''
The spiritual life which Christ gives those who believe in him continues to develop until it reaches its perfection in eternal life.
