Song of Thanksgiving
Stephen Whitney
Isaiah 12

Jonathan Edwards was born on October 5, 1703 to a pastor in Connecticut. He is considered one of the greatest American theologians of his day. He is best known for his sermon titled:
''Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God'' in 1741.

In his book The Religious Affections, he made a clear distinction between what he called ''natural'' gratitude and ''gracious'' gratitude. He wrote that natural gratitude is an appreciation
for God's good gifts such as: life, family, friends, joy, leisure, freedom, food, and sunshine. This kind of thankfulness may
be displayed by anyone whether they are a believer or not.
Matthew 5:45 God makes his sun rise on the evil and
on the good, and sends rain of the just and the unjust.

He wrote that gracious gratitude comes from a different place.
Instead of beginning with WHAT God gives us, this begins with
WHO God is and thanks him for his character, goodness, love, and power regardless of any favor which we have received from God.
This he wrote, is evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit in a life.

Thanksgiving is an attitude which can be expressed by the words which we say or through a song which comes from our heart.
