How Jesus Handled the Cruel (4 of 4)
Series: Difficult People (Is There Any Other Kind?)
Tony Thomas
Matthew 26-27
I was reminded several years ago that we live in a cruel world! A young mother phoned the church and asked for help. ''Do you have a few minutes to talk,'' she asked. Several days later we met in my office and for nearly an hour she poured out her heart.
She thought she had married a godly man but it didn't take long to discover her error. ''My husband is a control freak,'' she blurted out. And then she told some of the gory details.
When they dated he complimented her on her looks, but after they were married he criticized her appearance. He didn't like her makeup so he purchased what she would wear. He monitored her diet, approve and disapproved her clothing, and blamed her for the attention other men showed. Additionally, he tracked her mileage and if he thought it was excessive he interrogated her on her whereabouts. The bottom line was that she felt he belittled her self-worth by focusing on her flaws.
Sometimes, the home can be a cruel place. That includes husbands and wives, children and parents, and brothers and sisters who hurl vicious words that cut, demean and hurt. Aren't you glad Thursday is Thanksgiving?
The Psalmist once wrote, ''Deliver me, Lord, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men'' (Psalms 71:4). Nobody ever suffered more cruelty than the Son of God, and nobody ever responded with more grace.
We are concluding a series called, ''Difficult People: Is There Any Other Kind?'' We've talked about Judas, Peter and the Pharisees, and today's character is none other than Jesus Christ who forgave the cruel. How do you respond when others are cruel to you?
