Intro/Attention

We are studying the book of Exodus on Sunday mornings in a series I'm calling, Who Is This God? Today, from Exodus 18, I'm teaching on this sermon subject, The God Who Helps. Up to this point, we have encountered one exciting chapter after another - a burning bush, the plagues on Egypt, the Passover, the crossing of the Red Sea, manna from heaven, water from a rock, and a great victory over the enemy.

Today, it's almost like we get to catch our breath. We've been studying this book at a fairly rapid pace. And Exodus 18 gives us just a moment to collect our thoughts and slow down the pace a bit.

As we study this chapter, we encounter something like a family reunion for Moses. We see his father-in-law, ''Jethro,'' his wife, ''Zipporah,'' and his two sons, ''Gershom and Eliezer.'' READ 5-9, 13-23

*What do we notice about this passage? God brings help to Moses at just the right time. God knows what we need, how much we need, and when exactly we need it. He is a God who helps! And do you want to know something? You need help! Don't get offended, I need help too! We all need help! You've heard the famous phrase, ''God helps those who...'' Finish it for me, ''God helps those who...help themselves.'' I have one word for that, three simple syllables. Bah-lo-ney! Some people say, ''That's true, Pastor, it's in the Bible.'' Show me where you find that in Scripture. You will be looking until Jesus comes back to establish His millennial kingdom. It's not there! Do you know what the Bible says? God helps those who admit their need for Him. God helps those who desperately seek His presence. God helps those who realize they can't help themselves. It's the exact opposite of what our own American brand of Christianity has taught us. We are stubborn and independent sometimes. We think we can do it on our own and we don't need any help at all.
