Last Sunday I began a new series on Christmas Angels. Three angels are named (Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer), but I heard there's more. I missed Hark ... the Herald Angel, Lo ... the Angel of the Lord, and Bill Stockwell suggested the name of Raphael, the only Italian angel in the Bible! And one perverted member said I missed Charlie's Angels.

The Bible teaches that angels ''... visit us unaware.'' They are ''...ministering spirits sent to serve,'' and normally, angels are sent to protect us and to communicate God's message to man. Angels manifest themselves in a variety of forms: sometimes they're recognized; sometimes they aren't, and occasionally they pronounce judgment on those who rebel.

Last week we covered Gabriel's appearance to Zechariah to announce the birth of John. Today we're gonna look at Gabriel's appearance to Mary to announce the birth of Jesus Christ.

I. Gabriel's Assignment

Luke tells us that, ''In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee'' (Luke 1:26). Prior to Gabriel's visit to Elizabeth, God had been silent for four-hundred years.

Last Sunday afternoon every Oklahoma football fan lost their spit when it was announced that Lincoln Riley had accepted the post at USC. He's only the second coach in Oklahoma history to leave for another school! And now, a week has passed and still there's no word about his successor. A week! All of my boyhood friends are going out of their minds because we've gone seven days without a head coach!

But God was silent not for a week, but four-hundred years! No prophet, no revelation, no angelic appearances, and no word from God.

During the silence, God's people began to wonder where this promised Messiah was. Then, suddenly, Gabriel appeared! I believe in angels, but I also believe that their appearances are rare. The writer of Hebrews 13 reminds us:
