The book of Acts was written by Luke to a man named Theophilus whose name means ''friend of God.'' Apparently, Luke wanted Theophilus to know everything he had discovered about the life and ministry of the church. As he had done with his gospel Luke used first-hand accounts to assemble the truth.

Through many ''infallible proofs'' Jesus confirmed the truth of His resurrection. According to Strong's, this phrase describes ''a token that provides indisputable evidence.'' So, the book of Acts is the story of the continuing life and ministry of Christ as it was lived out through the life and ministry of the church.

That Jesus was alive was beyond question. How Jesus would continue His ministry through the church was the question. This would be accomplished through the Holy Spirit.

THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS PROMISED BY GOD
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ''which,'' He said, ''you have heard from Me;

God's promise of the Holy Spirit came through Jesus to the disciples. A promise is only as good as the character of the one making the promise and God's character is beyond dispute. Jesus told the disciples they were not to go anywhere or do anything until His promise of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled.
