(PPT CIRCLE) One of the most natural attributes of a human being is SELFISHNESS! This is something that we don't have to teach. Mine! Mine! Is the cry of our toddler. It embarrasses us and we attempt to correct it (hopefully), but somehow it doesn't go away. Today's culture (all generations) is eaten up with selfishness. In 1985, New Song recorded a song that said, ''I, Me, My, Mine.'' If you take an honest look around, you will discover that our culture is all about #1.
Businesses and advertisers know us so well. Every commercial is geared to our selfishness. ''Get the computer, life, the mate, the money, you deserve'', the list is endless. We may not like it, to admit it, or mean to or not, this culture pulls us in it like a giant tornado.
On the first Sunday of this year, I showed a video entitled ''ME CHURCH'' (VID). The line was - ''Where it's all about YOU.'' It was funny to watch, but sadly, it's all to true today in too many places. Thankfully, I don't see this as our MAJOR issue because, generally, we are an unselfish people. Let me be clear, we are not a perfect people, we can be selfish - but generally are not.
Scripture still speaks to us about being KNOWN as unselfish, being KNOWN to be like Jesus, being known the way He wants us to be. To help us see, I'm going to start with selfishness, its birth, its influence and impact, then we contrast that with the UNSELFISH church we are called to be. I want to offer some principles which will help us.
