A Pair of Used Skates
The year I was 12, all I wanted for Christmas was a pair of white ice skates. All my friends had them and I really wanted to be able to go skating with everyone. As Christmas grew near, my dad was laid off from work, but all I could think of was myself whirling around the ice skating rink with my friends having the time of my life.
Christmas morning came, and there was a large box with my name on it. I just knew it was the shiny white figure skates I had dreamed of. I eagerly ripped off the paper and opened the box. Inside I found a pair of used black hockey skates. My dad had a huge smile on his sweet face. My heart plummeted but I forced a huge smile and thanked mom and dad profusely.
I remember walking to the skating rink to skate with my friends, a little embarrassed by the black used skates. I covered it with a story that my folks thought I should learn how to skate first in my brother's old skates. It didn't seem to hurt so bad that way.
Kids will be kids and I took a ribbing from them for the old skates, but I learned and became a pretty good skater. I had so much fun at the rink that winter and was ashamed of myself for my disappointment over my skates not being new white ones.
