For the better part of my time here, this pulpit has been given to the preaching for the church, collectively. We have spent much time in our statements, our goals, our process (I.E. prayer, worship, evangelism, etc), and most recently, how persona (how we should want to be seen - as a JESUS CHURCH). You know, the NEW TESTAMENT Church is what God has placed for us to replicate. Yes, my heart is to copy a church, the Acts Church, the first church, the original church. My heart is for us to be like there were, Jesus' people, so I've felt led to preach to the church.
During this time, the call has been given to every person to make your salvation sure or, better said, make sure of your salvation. Once your salvation is certain, then find your place in the ministry, and go to work for the Kingdom. We have spoken directly to the church collectively.
Today I make a change. Today, it's more personal than ever. So I begin this way: In our day, people will spend most of their heart, their energy, their time, and their resources to make their dreams come true. And that could be the worst thing anyone could do.
You are thinking, ''Why would he say that?'' It's the same question that I asked over 10 years ago when I heard my friend, Dr. Ed Litton say the same thing. But I want to push this further to say, ''for God to give us our dreams might well be a disaster.'' Why? It's no accident that while I am literally struggling with God about how to communicate His truth for today, that oud Wednesday study from Jude revealed this. Scripture teaches us that the worst thing God can do is to give us the desires of your heart. Jude 8 Romans 1:21-25. Did you catch all of that? So, the reason that our dreams are bad idea is that, as human beings, we tend to make idols of or a god of our dreams and desires. Tony Evans says that we can make an idol of any noun: person, place, thing, or desire.
