Going Forward With God
Dr. Darrow Perkins
Ezekiel 24:14
Life can be full of setbacks or things that will cause you to move backwards concerning a situation. It seems like sometimes every step you take forward only causes you to move backwards two or three steps. In many cases, we see these setbacks as obstacles that push us further away from what we're trying to accomplish. Being able to identify these ''setbacks'' can help us to recognize where we are and where we're going. It has been said that if you don't know your history, you're doomed to repeat it and will never really know where you're going. We don't have to keep going backwards in life and besides, that's not what God wants us to do in the first place! Paul gives us an example about going forward that can be found in Philippians 3:14 which says, ''I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.'' We have to look at setbacks from a positive perspective and tell ourselves that ''a setback is a set up for your comeback.'' Knowing that I'm coming back tells me I'm going forward and if I'm really going forward, I must be ''Going Forward with God!
Our text is found in the book of Ezekiel. This prophet's name means ''God strengthens'' and considering what he was getting ready to go through, he needed the strength of God to bring him through. Just like Ezekiel needed that strength, so do we for John 15:5 tells us ''For without me, ye can do nothing.'' Ezekiel was one of three prophets who were also priests (Jeremiah and Zechariah being the other two). The Hebrew/Greek Key Word Study Bible has this to say about the Book of Ezekiel: ''The main topics discussed in the book fall into three basic sections:
• Those prophecies which stress the impending disaster of Jerusalem's fall (chaps 1-24).
• The judgments pronounced on surrounding nations (chaps. 25-32).
• The future hopes and trials of God's people (chaps 33-48).''
The purpose of Ezekiel's book can be described ...
