God Is Our Refuge
Dr. Darrow Perkins
Numbers 35:9-15
Do you recall a time when you were younger and needed to hide behind somebody or something when you were being chased by someone? That person or thing represented a safe haven from the one who was after you. I can remember playing a game called ''hide and go seek'' in which you had to hide in a place where you felt safe and nobody could find you. I've had dreams where I was running from someone and needed somewhere to turn just to get away from them. I always seemed to wake up before they caught me or the dream went to ''the next chapter'' and I got away from them. One dictionary defines the word refuge as ''Protection or shelter, as from danger or hardship; a place providing protection or shelter; or a source of help, relief, or comfort in times of trouble.''
Even today, we need a place to go that serves as our ''place of refuge'' from the struggles and difficulties of life.
When it seems like there's no place to turn, we can turn to God who is our refuge;
When it seems like the burdens of life are beginning to weigh us down, we can turn to God who is our refuge;
When it seems like we can't go any further, God is our refuge; someone we can turn to whenever we need to make a turn or a change.
When peer pressure begins to consume us, God is our refuge!
Our text is found in the Book of Numbers. This book is the fourth of five written by the hand of Moses and is part of the Books of the Law. This book is entitled Numbers as it reflects the numbering of the peoples which took place both in the beginning at Mt. Sinai in Chapter 1 and in the ending of the book in the plains of Moab in Chapter 36. A brief outline of the book reveals to us:
In Chapters 1-10, the Preparation for the March to the Promised Land;
In Chapters 11-15, the Tragic, Devastating Failure of Israel; Why People Forfeit their Right to Enter the Promised Land;
In Chapters 16-25, the Forty Long Years of Wilderness Wandering - A Pict ...
