An Offering Unto the Lord
Dr. Darrow Perkins
Leviticus 16:1-4
As time has gone on and things have changed, the understanding of what an offering in has changed over the years. Today, it appears that the consensus idea of an offering is something you put in the collection plate each week. The time to worship God during our financial giving has even become a tense moment for some. It's even gotten to the point in some circles that people have made up in their minds that they will not worship God during this time because somebody made them mad, or things are not going the way they want them to. Therefore, the mindset is that they will ''hurt'' the church by withholding their ''offering.'' We must understand that our giving in the church is proportional to our relationship with God and that by not giving, we're hurting our relationship with God in our disobedience and not the physical building called the ''church''. I want to go on record that this is not a message about financial giving in the church, but rather the giving, or offering of ourselves in service to the Lord for His many blessings towards us!
The word ''offering'' by definition is ''a presentation made to a deity as an act of worship.'' This lets us know that it was not something to be taken lightly, but rather to be done so in accordance with guidelines given by God. In order to do so, one needed to know and understand how the offering was to be brought, the type of offering, and the significance of the offering. Now concerning the offerings or sacrifices, there are eight Hebrew words for offerings:
Qorban: A sacrificial present; something brought near the altar;
Minchah: Literally signifies a gift from one who is inferior to a superior;
Terumah: a present, sacrifice gift; a heave offering;
Tenuwphah: brandishing; a wave offering;
Asham: guilt; fault; sin or trespass offering;
Olah: going up in smoke; a burnt offering;
Zebach: slaughter; sacrifices, or offering;
Asah: to do or make r ...
