A God of Marvelous Works
Dr. Darrow Perkins
Isaiah 29:13-14
It is human nature to anticipate or stand ready to see great things happen in your life or possibly in the lives of others around you. Because of anticipation, there's a longing for it to happen at the time in which it will take place. I've found that in order to see great and mighty things, you've got to get yourself in the right place to experience those great and mighty things. In most cases, they will not fall into your lap from the sky or just show up at your doorstep, but rather, you have to do something to experience it for yourself. For example, the very first time I saw the ocean, I was in awe at the magnificence and magnitude of the entire thing. There was water to the left as far as the eye could see; water to the right as far as the eye could see; water in front as far as the eye could see; but I discovered that I would never have been able to truly experience it unless I had tried to get to the ocean. If we want to see the marvelous works of God, we too must try to get in the right place to see and experience those marvelous works. For just a few moments, I want to talk about ''The Marvelous Works of God!''
Our text is found in the Book of Isaiah. As was previously stated, this book begins the prophetic books of the Bible and Isaiah is considered one of the major prophets of the Bible. The Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible says this about the Book of Isaiah; ''The Book of Isaiah contains more prophecies about the Messiah than any other book in the Old Testament. In fact, the plan of salvation is so comprehensively revealed in Isaiah's work that Augustine called it the fifth Gospel...''
Our writer is thought to have been the son of a prince of Judah as his writings display that of a learned man of culture and education. Isaiah's prophetic ministry expanded over 40 years and took place during the reign of four kings of Judah: Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.
