Overcoming Temptation (1 of 6)
Series: Spiritual Battle
Stephen Whitney
1 Corinthians 10:13

The cartoon Frank and Ernest is about two homeless men and how they view everyday life. In one cartoon they go to church and Frank asks the pastor, ''How come opportunity knocks once,
but temptation beats at my door every day?''

We often feel that way. Temptation is always just around the corner. We resist one and along comes another and another.
We are tempted to sin in one way or another or at different times.

Discipleship Journal, a Christian magazine, asked its readers
to rank the areas of greatest spiritual challenge to them. The
results were: 1. Materialism. 2. Pride. 3. Self-centeredness.
4. Laziness. 5. Anger/bitterness. 6. Envy. 7. Gluttony. 8. Lying.

Materialism can lead to pride and self-centeredness.
Self-centeredness can lead to laziness and lying.
Pride can lead to anger/bitterness and envy.

Some 80% said that their temptations were more potent when
they had neglected their time with God and 60% said temptation was harder to resist when they were tired.

Thomas Watson - ''Satan watches his time, and when
we least suspect, then he throws in a temptation.''

Overcome (KJB taken, NIV seized) - Gk. to take hold of
or possess. It described taking a person by force against their will.
