THE HIGH COST OF LOW LIVING
Romans 1:18-23
If you've never wondered: "What's wrong with me?" If
you are completely satisfied with your life; if you never
have to find something outside yourself, just to face life,
today's lesson may not mean much to you.
But if you've ever wondered why you can't become what,
deep inside, you know you ought to be; if it has ever puzzled
you that impressive people live on an animal level, taking
life like a dog takes an alley -- they talk about it, ra-
tionalize it, make it sound good -- yet when you try it it
isn't good -- then at least give an ear to God's Word for
you today.
You see, so many think our Lord wants to impose something
on your life -- to press a heavy burden on your already tired
existence. No so! He didn't come to impose a burden on you.
He came to lift a burden from you.
But first you have to face up to what's wrong; why so
great a creation as yqu can malfunction.
In the book of Romans God's great intent is to offer
us the gift of life. But first you must understand why we
all need it. So the scripture does not seek to impose some-
thing on you but to expose something in you.
Listen: "God's anger is revealed from heaven against
all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent
the truth from being known. God punishes them, because what
can be known about God is plain to them, for God Himself
made it plain. Ever since God created the world, his in-
visible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine
nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the
things that God has made. So those people have no excuse
at all! They know God, but they do not give Him the honor
that belongs to him, nor do they thank Him. Instead,
their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their
empty minds are filled with darkness. They say they are
wise, but they are fools." (Romans 1:12-23 TEV).
